THE ISLAND OF TODAY
The island with its crystal clear warm sea, endless beaches,
its gorges, its climate splendid plateaus and its mild starry nights has many to offer to
its visitor.
Today it continues to live fully and to develop, its cities particularly changing
in appearance from one day to the next, in contrast to the many unchanging villages where
life goes on in the same rhythm it has for centuries.
There are hundred of cafes where one can sit and enjoy a cup of Greek coffee
''polla vari'' meaning strong and sweat or ''gliki vrasto'' meaning light and sweat or
taste a glass of ''tsikoudia'' (raki), local strong drink.
There are also hundreds of tavernas and ouzeries serving some tasty local foods, a
specialty of the area. Taste yogurt with honey, fried cheese (staka), rabbit stew, cheese
pie from Hora Sfakion, cocles, boiled goat, pies made of wild greens flavoured with fennel
and sweet tarts ''kaltsounia''. Enjoy at the seaside tavernas found at all the beaches in
Crete, fresh fish, sea urchins, octopus and cuttlefish cooked on charcoal and fried
squids. And don't forget to taste the Cretan wine. In every festivation you will hear the
sound of the Cretan ''lyra'' and the rythme of the local dances, pentozali and sousta.
Meanwhile in every house ''xerotigana'' special holiday fritters are prepared.
In the shop windows you will find from local products to elegant furs,
jewellery and silverware. In the shops of Sitia and Ierapetra and Anogia you will be
amazed by ''patanies'' , traditional local wooden fabrics as well as by the skilfully
crafted ceramics and leather goods. In the ''Stivanadika'' district of Hania traditional
boots (called stivania) are still made in the old fashioned way, because though it may
seem strange, you will meet even today Cretans who still wear their traditional costume
and especially in festivation days. In the marketplace of Rethymnon and Chania, which are
nor easily met on any other place in Greece you will find every kind of food, fruit and
vegetable produced on the island. Exotic avocadoes, endive and bananas, juicy oranges and
fragrant melons, figs and prickly pears, delicious grapes, sweet tomatoes, tender
cucumbers, fresh wild greens from the hillsides, herbs and fragrant shrubs, oregon and
tea, snails and sardines, honey perfumed with thyme and wonderful cheese, graviera,
mizithra, fresh white cheese and soft staka.
The evenings are enchanting spent next to the intoxicating aroma of jasmine in a
small town cafe or gathered around the table of a fish tavern by the seashore, or
strolling in solitude on a remote desert beach watching the sun go down and then enjoying
the music in an open air beach bar under the starful sky near the sound of the night wind
and of the waves.
Maybe magic is that simple...
